Free Solar Panels FAQS

Free solar panels often arouse suspicions because it can be perceived as too good to be true, however it is a fantastic opportunity for both domestic and commercial clients.

We are asked a range of questions in relation to the opportunity and try our best to answer questions throughout the solar PV process. Sustain also try to maintain an active presence on social media to ensure that people are correctly informed about free solar panels.

We’ve collated some of the frequently asked questions regarding free solar panels for your reference:

Who owns the solar panels?
Sustain retain ownership of the panels and other equipment related to the free solar panel installation. After the 20 year period of the feed in tariff scheme, Sustain will agree with the property owner to leave the panels on the roof or ground location. Essentially, at this time the property owner is now the rightful owner of the solar panels and other equipment. The property is therefore able to continue the benefits of lower electricity bills and potentially any tariffs that maybe in place 20 years down the line.

Is there a buyout clause?
Currently we do not offer a buyout clause so you can purchase a system during the 20 year period of the feed in tariff. We have come across rather ridiculous scenarios with other free solar panel companies, who charge excessive amounts to buyout the contract. Figures in the region of £20,000 have been quoted to us and this does not seem fair or right. We would rather offer you the right solution from the outset based on your financial circumstances and objectives.

How often do you need access for maintenance?
We need to access the property during specified time periods and at your convenience. It is not necessary or indeed appropriate for us to simply turn up at your property without giving you any notice and on a weekly basis. Sustain will organise maintenance visits with you in accordance with the contract.

Are free solar panels available to all?
Unfortunately, free solar panels cannot be installed on every property in United Kingdom due to a number of variables. Firstly, the panels need to be installed on a south facing roof to deliver optimum performance or within 55 degrees either side of due south. Therefore, roofs facing south east or south west are applicable. As such, Sustain only install solar panels for free on roofs that deliver optimum performance. We may also decline a free solar panel application due to shading from trees or other objects in the locality of the roof. Sometimes the structure of the roof and the space available does not make it economically viable for Sustain to provide a free solar panel installation.

Can I get a mortgage or re-mortgage on properties with free solar panels?
Unfortunately, there are a selected bunch of journalists who continue to stir up confusion in relation to obtaining mortgages and remortgages on properties with free solar panels installed. Indeed, some leases for free solar panel schemes do not comply with the Council of Mortgage Lenders Guidelines. In these circumstances you may find future problems when trying to obtain a mortgage or selling your property. However, the contract from Sustain does adhere with the Guidelines and many of our customers’ homes have been sold with free solar panels installed. If you need further confirmation and guidance on this situation please get in touch with us and we will be happy to clarify any questions that you have.

How long will the installation take?
With everything all in place, we should be able to install a solar PV installation in a day. Sometimes it takes longer depending on the complexities of the property and the roof. Typically, we will install scaffolding two days prior to the solar panel installation itself. This ensures a smooth operation and minimum disruption to your daily routine. The electrician will need access to your loft, so that the inverter and cabling can be installed. They also need access to the fuse board and surrounding area, where we will also install the generation meter and connect up the solar PV system.

Will my roof be secure and what about high winds?
If there are any structural difficulties we will highlight them during the survey process, however the majority of roofs in the UK have been constructed with appropriate strength. The panels are installed close to the edge of the roof, so it is hard for wind to blow under them. You should also be aware that the mounting system as well is the nuts and bolts have been tested rigorously to ensure they are not affected by adverse weather conditions. Remember that Germany is the current leader with the installation of solar PV and their climate is very similar to the United Kingdom.

Will roof tiles be damaged?
Sustain are an MCS approved solar PV organisation and we are therefore appropriately trained in these kind of installations. Our national network of surveyors, installers and project managers are made up of the most experienced individuals in the solar PV industry. We therefore understand the complexities of different roofs, including the implications in relation to tile and slate roofs. If any part of the roof is damaged we always have spare tiles available in our vans to ensure that the aesthetics of your roof remain unchanged.  Sustain are fully insured and responsible for any mistakes we make.

Will I see a disruption in electricity supply?
The electrician will need to switch off the power for approximately 20 minutes to complete the installation.

Should I change electricity supplier after the installation?
No, you’re don’t need to do this, change your electricity supply as and when you wish.

Do I still get an electricity bill?
Yes you will still receive an electricity bill from your utility supplier, however it is likely to be much lower than what you currently pay because you will be utilising the electricity generated by the solar PV system during the day.
